The New England Patriots clearly had a motto of out with the old all throughout the 2024 offseason. The Bill Belichick era officially ended, and Jerod Mayo took over as head coach. Even though Mayo was previously with the team as an assistant coach, he took a look at the roster and decided that it needed to be gutted in a number of ways.

The Patriots cut ties with a lot of dead weight this offseason and went with a youth movement on the roster.

Which former Patriots players struggled the worst in their Week 1 games with new NFL teams?

1. Trent Brown, offensive tackle, Bengals

Things did not go well for former Patriots offensive tackle Trent Brown. Brown has always been a bit of an enigma, someone who played really well when he was on the Patriots but simply hasn't been able to thrive in other NFL cities.

That seemingly continued as Brown was getting whipped around in the Bengals' season-opening loss to none other than the New England Patriots. Case in point:

Even just last year, the Patriots couldn't really rely on Trent Brown's availability. Whether it's due to off-field issues or injury issues, Brown has simply not been a reliable player through the years.

The Patriots let him hit free agency this offseason and the Bengals scooped him up to the tune of $4.75 million on a one-year deal. Ultimately, that's not that bad of a risk for the Bengals to take given the talent level Brown has shown throughout his NFL career when he's healthy and motivated to play, but the results in Week 1 were pretty astonishingly bad.

Bad enough that Bengals fans on Twitter/X were calling for Jonah Williams to come back.

It wasn't all bad for Brown as he had some good reps and did a decent job in the run blocking department, but it certainly has to be considered a failure when the Bengals' top goal is obviously to protect Joe Burrow.
