Patriots fans, rejoice. The major three-year, $33 million bust is no longer in New England. JuJu Smith-Schuster was released on Friday, opening up a roster spot and creating a potential need for more veteran depth at wide receiver.

Even before the release of the 27-year-old, the Patriots lacked in quantity and quality at receiver. DeMario Douglas and Kendrick Bourne were guaranteed as the two starters, as well as rookie Ja'Lynn Polk, but the depth behind them is highly questionable. K.J. Osborn and Javon Baker will presumably play a large role on the offense but this group doesn't necessarily strike fear into the opponents' hearts.

The Patriots will likely struggle on the offensive end to start the season. Expectations are low and this is more of a developmental season. So, it's safe to assume that the third-overall pick Drake Maye will take over at some point in the season. Giving him more weapons in his rookie season to ease his transition to the NFL is a smart move.

Fortunately, there are a couple of available wide receivers who would be a good fit in Foxborough. The Patriots have shown their desire to add a receiver when they chased Brandon Aiyuk for a long time. Whether they would try to land another big-name star remains to be seen but there are certainly a few playmakers who can build a good connection with Maye, both on the trade block and the free agent market. Let's take a look at the three best options.
