6 Patriots on the Bubble Ahead of 2024 Training Camp
6. Mitchell Wilcox, Tight End
There are some changes this season to the tight end position for the New England Patriots, but not at the top of the depth chart.
Despite the team's lack of (let's call it) consistency at the quarterback position, the Patriots were able to convince veteran Hunter Henry to come back for a second contract with the team. Henry has been one of the best pass-catching tight ends in the NFL for quite some time and would have been one of the more coveted pass-catching tight ends on the market but the Patriots made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
The 30-year-old received a three-year deal worth $27 million in total money to come back to the Patriots after catching six touchdown passes last season. With Henry back in the mix, the Patriots made some notable changes to their depth at the position.
They replaced Mike Gesicki and Pharaoh Brown at the position with veteran Austin Hooper -- formerly a Pro Bowl player with the Atlanta Falcons -- and rookie draft pick Jaheim Bell, a pass-catching threat who can play in line or a big slot role.
There won't likely be spots for more than three tight ends on the roster, which means a player like Mitchell Wilcox is on the bubble. Wilcox has played a lot of special teams which could give him an advantage (as well as his 48 games played in total) but the Patriots might opt for the upside in Bell if he continues having a strong offseason in 2024.
