As teams around the league kick off training camps and prepare for the 2024 season, the absence of New England Patriots legend Bill Belichick still looms large. After striking out with the Atlanta Falcons, Belichick has since turned his attention to jobs in the media, as negative reports about his preferred management style seemed to cool his market.

However, it turns out one big-name coach tried to jump at the opportunity to add Belichick as a coach -- but he declined.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, San Francisco 49ers HC Kyle Shanhan said he's "shocked" Belichick isn't employed by a team right now. Shanahan then revealed he offered whatever role Belichick would like on his staff, even defensive coordinator, but Belichick passed.

It's certainly surprising to hear Belichicked turned down this chance. After all, with his stock at its lowest, going to a Super Bowl contender and helping them succeed would give his perception across the NFL a much-needed boost.

That being said, it would be a demotion for one of the greatest coaches of all-time. Considering he was a finalist for the Falcons job, it's clear he could still be back in the driver's seat if he just bides his time. And the six-time SB champ reportedly has a few jobs already in his sights.

By staying out of the spotlight for a season, Belichick will get to watch as some HC candidates take the heat when their squads underperform. That'll then allow him to reenter the market as one of the prized hiring targets again, setting him up to get back in the saddle in 2025.
