The New England Patriots have undergone so much overturn this offseason. It began in January when they let go of Bill Belichick and replaced him with Jerod Mayo and Eliot Wolf.

They then added Drake Maye with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft with the belief that he'll be the next franchise quarterback.

The organization doesn't want to just throw Maye into the fire, that's why they signed Jacoby Brissett in March. He's been getting all the first-team reps in practice thus far but Maye's recent play is making Mayo's job that much harder.

Pats News: Drake Maye Lights Up Practice

The Pats began mandatory minicamp on June 10, as they get their final tune-up before taking a break prior to training camp.

The media was able to be present at practice and there were reports that Maye was on fire. According to Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald, this was the best Maye had looked thus far in a Pats uniform.

Kyed had Maye going 18-of-23 with three touchdown passes to Jaheim Bell, Kayshon Boutte, and La'Michael Pettway.

Granted this was during 7 on 7 but this is clear evidence that Maye has been improving since stepping foot in New England.

As previously mentioned, Brissett was brought in to be the starter this season but if Maye continues this positive trajectory in practice, it'll be hard for Mayo to keep him on the sideline.

A big reason the Pats selected Maye was due to his natural physical abilities. He owns a powerful throwing arm to all three levels on the field. The North Carolina product can also move the pocket and displayed a soft touch on throws downfield. The next step for him is the mental toughness of being in the NFL.

The 21-year-old is still taking QB2 reps behind Brissett but if he continues to play like this, it'll be a matter of time until Mayo trots him out there with the first team.
