The 2024 NFL regular season is starting this week. The first matchup happens on Thursday night but the Pats don't suit up until Sunday.

But for the first time in over two decades, there will be someone new on the sidelines. Jerod Mayo has taken over head coaching duties from Bill Belichick and is now tasked with being the lead man on the sideline.

That is a lot of pressure for the 38-year-old head coach and he's already showing signs of weakness before the season kicks off.

Patriots News: Jerod Mayo Is Still Talking About the QB Competition

This offseason the Pats signed quarterback Jacoby Brissett as a free agent and selected Drake Maye in April's draft. These men were battling for the QB1 job but Brissett was named the starter on Aug. 29.

Instead of just publicly supporting your quarterback, Mayo stated that Maye played more than Brissett in the preseason on purpose but he had to do some damage control.

"I should have given more context to the comment at the time. Drake had more playing time in the preseason than Jacoby, and that was intentional."

This comes after he made a comment last week that said Maye played better than Brissett this summer, which led to fans asking why Brissett was the starter.

Now he had to revisit these comments and say that the UNC product purposely got more reps. This is just highlighting how Mayo doesn't sound confident in his decision. That can be perceived as being a lackluster leader who doesn't have faith in his decisions.

Everyone knows that Maye is the guy for the future but since he named Brissett the starter, he should have just backed him publicly. Instead, he said the 22-year-old played better but named the eight-year vet as the starter.

His lapses with the media showcase his lack of experience heading into the 2024 campaign.
