The New England Patriots have had a very interesting and drama-filled offseason, to say the least. They have changed head coaches and added new quarterbacks as they look to change the identity of the team.

The most exciting addition this offseason was selecting Drake Maye. Fans have been clamoring to see their new rookie quarterback on the field. The likelihood that Maye touches the field as the starter just increased when Jacoby Brissett injured his shoulder on Sunday's preseason finale against the Washington Commanders.

But despite the uncertainty surrounding Brissett, Mayo has made some puzzling comments.

Pats News: Jerod Mayo Makes Surprising Comments on QB Competition

Ever since the game wrapped up last night, Mayo has been making confusing comments about Drake Maye's status as a potential starter.

Last night after the game, he said Maye was the second-best quarterback on the team but this morning he said Maye has outplayed Jacoby.

He continued to praise Maye on WEEI.

"This is a true competition... and I would say at this current point, Drake has outplayed Jacoby. Now in saying that, we have to take in the full body of work going all the way back to the spring and the beginning of training camp. We'll see."

Jerod Mayo

In that same breath of raving about Maye, Mayo talked about how rookie quarterbacks have struggled immensely.

The 38-year-old head coach doesn't seem to know what he wants to do at the quarterback position but his statements are sending mixed signals.

During the preseason, Maye has gone 21-of-34 for 192 yards and one touchdown. He's shown flashes already, which has caught the attention of the coaching staff. But no one knows when Maye will be trotting out on the field as the starter.

It doesn't sound like Mayo knows either.
