The grueling weeks of training camp are getting closer and closer to wrapping up. The New England Patriots have played two preseason games thus far, going 1-1 in those two contests.

On Aug. 15, the Patriots narrowly fell to the Philadelphia Eagles 14-13. In that matchup, they were short-handed in the secondary but on Friday, head coach Jerod Mayo spoke with reporters and revealed that two key players in the secondary are on the verge of returning.

Patriots News: Jonathan Jones and Marcus Jones Set To Hit the Field Soon

According to Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald, Mayo said that both Jonathan Jones and Marcus Jones are close to returning to the field.

Both guys have been sidelined with undisclosed injuries throughout training camp. During the joint practices with the Eagles this week, both defensive backs were limited participants but Mayo decided to let them rest instead of throwing them into the preseason bout.

Defensive backs Christian Gonzalez, Alex Austin, Marco Wilson, and rookie Marcellas Dial took the majority of snaps on Thursday but the reinforcements are close to suiting up. The Patriots open up the regular season on Sept. 8 as they travel to play the Cincinnati Bengals.

Jonathan has been in New England for the past eight seasons, playing at least 14 games in seven of his eight years. The Auburn product has recorded 378 total tackles, 51 pass deflections, eight forced fumbles, and 11 interceptions in his career.

Meanwhile, Marcus is heading into his third season and wants to be healthy for the 2024 season. Last season, he suffered a torn labrum in Week 2 and was placed on injured reserve. In 17 games with the Pats, he's logged 44 total tackles, seven pass breakups, and two interceptions.

Getting these guys back into the fold will give the Pats a massive boost.
