For the past week and a half, New England Patriots fans have been wondering who will start at quarterback for them this week. After getting benched for the third time this season in Week 10, Mac Jones' job security appeared to be totally up in the air, especially with the Patriots having a bye week to assess their backup options.
As usual, Bill Belichick has remained extremely vague on the subject, refusing to confirm whether Jones will sit or start in Week 12. Jones appeared to give away Belichick's plan during an interview on Wednesday, however.
Jones revealed that he's had "good conversations" with Belichick about who will start at QB for New England this week, implying that Jones will be the guy. He basically confirmed as much when reporters asked him if he will start, saying "I hope so. That's the plan."
That doesn't come as a major shock, as Jones is still the best quarterback on the roster. As bad as he's been, Bailey Zappe's been even worse. Rookie QB Malik Cunningham has been deemed too raw and may never develop into an NFL starting quarterback, while third-stringer Will Grier hasn't appeared in an NFL game since 2019.
For all of the hand-wringing over Jones this year, it's hard to justify sitting him in favor of any of those guys. If the Patriots want to win, Jones still gives them the best chance to do so. He's the only QB on the team with extensive NFL experience, and as a former first-round pick and Pro Bowler, he's also the most talented.
At this point, New England has come too far with Jones. The season is already in the toilet, so benching him now isn't going to save it. There's no one who's clearly better waiting behind them, so the Pats might as well ride out the storm with Mac and see if he can turn things around over the next few weeks. What do they have to lose?
