New Patriots Signing Shows Desperation at Key Position
The New England Patriots have been in news cycles throughout the entire offseason. It started in January when they changed coaches and it continued over the past couple of months as they made a bunch of moves to start reshaping this roster.
The Pats started training camp on July 24 and players have started helping and hurting their cases for the 2024 season.
On Friday, New England addressed some OL depth and made an addition.
Pats News: Kellen Diesch Is Going To Join the Pats
Per Mike Reiss of ESPN, New England is going to bring in and sign OL Kellen Diesch. He came into the NFL in 2022 as an undrafted free agent with the Pats division rival Miami Dolphins.
He also spent time with the Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Cleveland Browns.
The 26-year-old plays tackle and now provides some more depth to that group. The Pats plan to have Mike Onwenu playing right tackle in 2024 but there is competition for left tackle.
New England signed Chukwuma Okorafor in March before adding Caedan Wallace in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Those two men have been battling to see who will come out on top but the addition of Diesch makes it look like the team isn't too confident in the depth at tackle.
Calvin Anderson, Zuri Henry, Vederian Lowe, and Tyrone Wheatley Jr. are the other tackles on the roster. Maybe some of these guys didn't impress the staff enough over the first week of training camp practices so New England tapped into the free-agent market.
There is still a good month before the regular season starts so teams have time to filter out the best options.
That is exactly what New England is doing with the addition of Diesch and we should keep an eye on it.
