NFL Took Drastic Step After Patriots Kicker's Record-Breaking Field Goal
The New England Patriots are on a three-game losing streak after securing a win in Week 1. In Week 4, the Patriots went on the road to square off against the San Francisco 49ers but fell short.
The 49ers dominated the Pats and beat them 30-13. Even though New England lost, it wasn't a complete waste.
Kicker Joey Slye hit a 63-yard field goal at the end of the first half. That kick set a team record for the longest-made field goal in team history.
Now a few days after the game, he got a notice posted in his locker.
Patriots News: Joey Slye Gets Drug Tested
Slye posted a picture on his Instagram story showing a picture of him being selected for an NFL drug test with the caption "Random".
The NFL decided they wanted to see if there were any enhancements involved after the 28-year-old hit that bomb of a kick.
Regardless, that 63-yard field goal passed the previous team record of 62 yards by K Stephen Gostkowski at Oakland on Nov. 19, 2017 in Mexico City.
Slye's previous best was 61 yards back in 2023 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
That 63-yarder is now tied for the fourth-longest made field goal in NFL history. This season for the Pats, the Virginia Tech product is 8-of-9 on field goals, 4-of-4 on extra point attempts, and has 28 points scored.
Over 75 career games, he is 129-of-156 (82%) on field goal attempts and logged 529 total points. He's been consistent in 2024 with New England but the NFL decided to take the extra step with him going into Week 5.
