New England Patriots assistant Troy Brown was reportedly under consideration for the wide receivers coach job at Arizona State last week.

Brown, who has been a part of the Patriots’ coaching staff since 2020 in multiple roles, saw his title change to “skill development” under new head coach Jerod Mayo. However, it appears as if the 52-year-old Patriots legend will not be taking his talents to the collegiate level.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported over the weekend that former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward has agreed to become the new wide receivers coach at Arizona State. Ward was recently the head coach in the XFL with the San Antonio Brahmas.

The former Steelers wide receiver also was an offensive assistant with the New York Jets and a wide receivers coach in the collegiate ranks at Florida Atlantic.

If you are Mayo, you are taking a huge sigh of relief as it would be tough to lose Brown, who has been with the organization for years and helped with the scouting for the 2024 NFL Draft. Brown served as the offensive coordinator for the American team at the Reese’s Senior Bowl earlier this year.

The three-time Super Bowl winning wide receiver was also the head coach of the West team for the East-West Shrine Bowl in Las Vegas, NV.

As previously mentioned, Brown will work in a skill development role this season as Tyler Hughes takes over as the wide receivers coach and will have former Patriots wideout Tiquan Underwood as his assistant.

The Patriots will hope that all of their skill players, especially their wide receivers, will play better next season after they were disappointing for most of the 2023 season.
