The New England Patriots had one of their worst performances in recent years on Thursday Night Football against the New York Jets. They were overmatched in all aspects of the game and if anything, the 24-3 scoreline doesn't reflect how lopsided the entire affair was.

Things were especially dire on the offensive side of the ball. The Patriots finished with 139 total yards, averaging less than three yards per play. Jacoby Brissett, for his part, completed 12 of 18 passes for 98 yards and was sacked five times.

It is obviously hard to blame Brissett for that performance. The offensive line was a disaster as the Patriots have yet to find the right combinations amidst all the injuries. They allowed constant pressure and seven sacks for the game.

At the same time, things obviously need to change. Yet, the Patriots' offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt doesn't think so. In his remarks on Friday, Van Pelt said that Brissett is playing exactly how they want him to play according to Mike Giardi of Boston Sports Journal.

While it is understandable that the Patriots want to stand behind their veteran quarterback after a tough loss, it's hard to argue that Brissett has been playing well so far this season. It is true that he doesn't make any mistakes, plays behind an awful offensive line, and faces constant pressure, he hasn't made much of a difference. So far, he has a 60.9% completion rate, 368 passing yards, and one touchdown pass while adding 38 rushing yards in nine attempts through three games.

The Patriots have been trying to be a run-heavy team since the beginning of the season. They abandoned that early against the Jets once they fell behind early.

New England would likely have lost regardless of who the quarterback was on Thursday night. Brissett isn't being put in a position to succeed but arguing that there is nothing he could do to play better is incomprehensible.
