Patriots Cut Specialist to Trim Roster Down Ahead of Deadline
By Jovan Alford
With the New England Patriots finishing the 2024 NFL preseason on Sunday night against the Washington Commanders, first-year head coach Jerod Mayo and the rest of the front office will start cutting the roster down from 90 to 53 players.
The Patriots will make multiple cuts at certain positions like the secondary, defensive line, and wide receiver ahead of Tuesday’s deadline. On Monday, the team officially started the process, cutting long snapper Tucker Addington, per Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald.
The 27-year-old long snapper was signed earlier this month as the backup behind starter Joe Cardona.
Before signing with the Patriots for training camp, Addington spent the last month of the 2023 season with the Washington Commanders before being waived in the spring.
The former Sam Houston State special teamer was with the Patriots last summer for training camp but was released and then he latched on with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags only kept Addington on the 90-man roster for nine days before releasing him.
In addition to his stint last summer with the Patriots, Addington also spent time in New England for the 2022 season. The veteran long-snapper was promoted from the practice squad and played in three games due to a season-ending injury to Cardona.
Nonetheless, with Addington being cut on Monday, there’s a chance he could find his way back to New England’s practice squad. However, with the cuts that the Pats will have to make at other positions, practice squad spots could be limited.
