Patriots Insider Suggests Massive QB Shakeup Could Be Coming
By Tyler Maher
For much of the season, New England Patriots fans have been wondering if and when the team would finally admit it made a mistake with Mac Jones and move on.
According to one team insider, a big change could be coming soon.
Patriots Quarterback Rumors
During his appearance on the Rich Eisen Show, Patriots beat writer Tom Curran speculated that Jones' time as New England's starting quarterback might finally be done. He suggested that Jones could be benched after the team's bye week and perhaps even be demoted to third-string with backups Bailey Zappe and Will Grier fighting for the starting job.
Based on Jones' performance and Bill Belichick's recent comments, that is certainly possible. The Patriots are 2-8 with Jones as the starter this year and have the worst record in the AFC. While Jones isn't the only problem in New England, his costly mistakes (10 interceptions) and inability to finish games are a big reason for the team's struggles.
With the Patriots off this week, things appear to be coming to a head. Jones was benched during New England's final drive in its Week 10 loss in Germany -- his third benching already this season. Recent reports claim that Jones has lost the locker room, and Belichick refused to commit to him as the starter going forward, saying he's evaluating all positions.
The writing seems to be on the wall for Jones, as a change is clearly needed. If he does remain the starter, he absolutely has to beat the New York Giants in Week 12 to keep his job. If he doesn't, the team will have no choice but to go in a different direction at quarterback.
