Patriots Land Elite WR in Blockbuster Projected Trade
By Cem Yolbulan
The peak of NFL offseason and free agency is over as teams are enjoying their summer breaks before reconvening for their training camps in a month or so. There are still available free agents and players on the trade block but not much activity is expected until the training camp. The New England Patriots have largely stood pat this offseason as they hope to evaluate their young players and have a developmental season under new head coach Jerod Mayo.
There are still big dominoes to fall in the NFL, however, and the Bleacher Report proposed that the Patriots could get involved. One of the best players reportedly on the trade block right now is star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk of the San Francisco 49ers. Kristopher Knox of B/R engineered a blockbuster three-team trade scenario that would bring the dynamic pass-catcher to Foxborough.
The proposed trade looks like this:
Falcons Get: EDGE Matthew Judon
Patriots Get: WR Brandon Aiyuk
49ers Get: CB Mike Hughes, Patriots' 2025 first-round pick, Falcons' 2025 third-round pick
This would undoubtedly send massive shockwaves across the league. New England gets Aiyuk in exchange for a first-round pick and pass rusher Matthew Judon, while the 49ers get cornerback Mike Hughes from Atlanta, a first-round pick, and a third-round pick.
Aiyuk is entering the final year of his contract after back-to-back 1,000+ yards seasons. He understandably wants to get paid like one of the best receivers in the league. San Francisco is playing hardball with him so far, creating a ton of trade speculations around his name.
Yet, if the 49ers decided to trade Aiyuk, they would likely prioritize ready-to-contribute players rather than draft picks. Whether the Patriots would have the best offer out there for the 26-year-old WR is difficult to fathom.
Plus, as good as Aiyuk is, the Patriots don't really need to go all out for him just yet. The Patriots will likely be one of the worst teams in the league next season and will have a top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Giving that up to make a WR who has never made the Pro Bowl one of the highest-paid receivers in the league would not be a smart decision.
Besides, the Patriots just drafted Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker and it behooves them to give them a chance to properly evaluate what they have in the receiver room. This three-team trade proposal is certainly a fascinating idea but the Patriots shouldn't be too interested in it.
