After a promising start to the 2024 campaign, the New England Patriots are performing at a level many had predicted before the season.

Yet, three straight deflating losses aren't even the worst of it. The Patriots are depleted with injuries and it keeps getting worse.

Earlier on Wednesday, center David Andrews was placed on injured reserve after it was announced that he required shoulder surgery. One of the longest-tenured Patriots, Andrews was the heart and soul of the offense. The already short-handed offensive line will find it difficult to replace their most competent veteran.

The Patriots obviously needed to bring in reinforcements after the injury. According to Patriots insider Mark Daniels, they did so by signing Jerome Carvin to the practice squad.

NFL News: Patriots Sign OL Jerome Carvin to Practice Squad

Carvin played five years at the University of Tennessee where he started 43 games. His versatility has been his calling card throughout his career, having multiple starts at left guard, right guard, and center. Considering the Patriots' desperate need for help on every position on the offensive line, that is a valuable skill set and experience to have.

After going undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft, Carvin spent some time with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Chicago Bears. He was waived ahead of the roster cutdown day. He was initially signed to the Patriots practice squad in August but was released two weeks later. It makes sense that the Patriots turned to a familiar face when they needed help the most.

No one will replace what Andrews means to this team. His presence on and off the field was too important. But perhaps the loss can be alleviated if young players like Carvin who are waiting for their chance in the NFL can step up.
