Patriots’ Mega Contract Offer to Brandon Aiyuk Revealed
It's been a wild offseason and last couple of days for the New England Patriots. The Pats are in the early stages of a rebuild but that hasn't stopped them from dishing out some money.
They have extended 10 players in-house, including guys like Davon Godchaux and Jabrill Peppers.
That hasn't stopped them from pursuing other outlets to improve the team. The Pats were looking to acquire San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. They had the framework done with the 49ers in terms of trade compensation. The next hurdle was getting Aiyuk to agree to a long-term deal, which he declined to do.
Now the price tag New England offered to Aiyuk has been revealed.
Patriots News: New England Offered Brandon Aiyuk Massive Extension
According to Mike Reiss of ESPN, the Patriots offered Aiyuk an extension that would have paid him $32 million annually across four years.
Despite this lucrative offer, Aiyuk decided to pass on joining the Patriots.
You can look at it from two different lenses as a Patriots fan. First, you can praise management for not staying content with the roster. They are actively looking for upgrades to make this a better squad.
But on the other side, this showcases the Patriots aren't a prized destination like they once were. Instead, players don't want to head over to New England for the long haul, which will make things harder.
The Pats will have to build this from the ground up before this becomes a location where players want to come for the long term.
The focus in 2024 will be on establishing the right culture and foundation for the future.
As for Eliot Wolf, you can only tip your hat to him for attempting to acquire a star playmaker. Sometimes it just doesn't work in your favor.
