Patriots Must Capitalize on Major Trade Opportunity for Disgruntled Playmaker
By Jovan Alford
The New England Patriots’ wide receiver unit has been less than stellar through the first month of the 2024 season. The Patriots overhauled their receiver room this offseason, drafting rookies Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker, and signing veteran K.J. Osborn to a one-year deal in free agency.
Polk has played well out of that group to start his NFL career, recording eight receptions (13 targets) for 61 yards. In addition to those three receivers, New England also has second-year pass catcher Demario Douglas.
Douglas is second on the team in receiving with 12 receptions (15 targets) for 94 yards. That said, the Patriots could use more young talent in their wide receiver room as they look to find their offensive identity.
With the NFL trade deadline on the horizon, a few receivers could be available to acquire. Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs has been in the news this week for reportedly skipping practice due to unhappiness about his role.
The Packers suspended the young wideout for Week 5, listing it as conduct detrimental to the team. On Saturday, Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported that teams called this week to check on Doubs’ potential availability via trade.
However, Jones added that Green Bay has no interest in moving at this time. Even though Green Bay hopes for things to be fixed with the third-year wideout, if you are Patriots GM Eliot Wolf, Doubs could be another solid addition to the offense.
The Patriots reportedly had a top-30 visit with Doubs ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft. The Patriots also had two other meetings during the draft cycle.
The future of New England's offense could be Doubs, Douglas, and Polk, which isn’t horrible on paper. But not all fans are keen on the idea of the Patriots trading for Doubs as New England can’t protect the quarterback, leading to struggles in the passing game.
Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see what happens with Doubs and if the Patriots will make any moves at the trade deadline. According to a report from Jason La Canfora this week, former second-round Tyquan Thornton is available for trade. But the Patriots wide receiver hasn’t done much in his career to warrant significant talks.
