Pats Coach Questionably Missing From Updated 2024 Staff List
First-year NFL head coach Jerod Mayo is tasked with guiding the New England Patriots into a new era. While there's been plenty of discussion regarding the 38-year-old's outlook throughout the offseason, things became more real on Tuesday when the Patriots officially revealed their 2024 coaching staff.
While none of the additions were surprising, it didn't take Patriots fans long to notice one concerning omission.
Patriots News: Troy Brown Left Off 2024 Staff List
Former Patriots player-turned-coach Troy Brown was nowhere to be found on the franchise's 2024 coaching staff list. Team insider Zack Cox pointed out that the 53-year-old "was coaching with the Patriots during the spring" and that it's possible that the franchise isn't listing "skill development" coaches.
Brown served as the team's wide receiver coach beginning in 2021, however, he was replaced by former Washington Huskies offensive analyst Tyler Hughes back in February.
Despite losing his job to Hughes, Mayo confirmed back in March that Brown is "still on the staff" and that he'll "work with the scheme on the offensive side of the ball."
Nevertheless, lending credence to Cox's theory is the fact that director of skill development Joe Kim and Mayo's right-hand man Matthew Slater were also left off the list. While the duo and Brown might still be working with the Patriots, it's potentially on a part-time basis.
Drafted 198th overall in 1993, Brown played all of his 192 games across 15 seasons in a Patriots jersey. He made 557 receptions for 6,366 yards and 31 touchdowns throughout his career, however, his real impact was made on special teams where he racked up 1,862 yards on 87 kick returns while returning 252 punts for another 2,625 yards and three TDs.
He even won three Super Bowl rings with the franchise and has since been included on the Patriots' All-2000s, 50th Anniversary, and All-Dynasty teams.
The Patriots Hall of Famer returned to the franchise as an official coaching staff member in 2020, handing running back and punt/kick return duties. Even though he was promoted to the WR coaching gig one year later, he still maintained his special teams duties.
Time will tell just how big Browns' role in New England is going forward. While the team's wide receivers may not have had the best development under his watch, he's still a Patriots fan favorite who deserves some a role with the franchise after everything he left on the gridiron.
