Possible Patriots QB Trade Target Suffers Major Injury Right Before Deadline
By Tyler Maher
If the New England Patriots are still hoping to trade for a new quarterback before Tuesday's trade deadline, they'll need to cross at least one name off their list.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins suffered a torn Achilles during Sunday's 24-10 win over the Green Bay Packers, likely ending his season.
Kirk Cousins Injury Update
Cousins exited Sunday's win early with the injury, which was later diagnosed as a torn Achilles based on the team medical staff's initial examination, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell. He will undergo an MRI to confirm the injury, but if it's indeed an Achilles tear then Cousins will be done for the year.
That's a rough break for Cousins, who has never missed a game in his NFL career before due to injury. Cousins did miss 1 game due to Covid in 2021, but other than that he's been remarkably healthy.
The 35-year-old QB was having a strong season prior to going down, too. Before Week 8, he had already racked up 2,057 passing yards an 16 passing TDs on a 68.9% completion rate.
With Cousins presumably out for the foreseeable future, the 4-4 Vikings will likely turn to backup QB Jaren Hall to replace him as they try to stay alive in the playoff race. Cousins' injury is terrible timing for them given their place in the standings and with the NFL Trade Deadline only two days away, leaving them little time to find a veteran replacement.
Meanwhile, the Patriots will need to look elsewhere if they're serious about acquiring a new quarterback. There aren't too many options available at the moment, and Cousins was clearly the best one on the market.
