The New England Patriots made a shocking move on Tuesday, releasing veteran wide receiver Jalen Reagor from the practice squad. The decision to cut Reagor caught some fans off guard since he hasn’t played in the Patriots’ first two regular season games.

However, other Pats fans immediately thought Reagor’s release was tied to a meme he posted on Instagram that showed a brand-new car parked next to a house. The Instagram post gave the impression that Reagor wasn’t happy about being stashed away on the practice squad.

That said, the latest report from Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald suggests that the social media post had nothing to do with the former first-round pick being cut.

“Reagor’s release wasn’t the direct result of the social media post. The speedy wideout had expressed similar sentiments internally leading up to Tuesday’s roster, according to a source.”

The 25-year-old wide receiver initially made the Patriots’ 53-man roster late last month but was cut a day later and signed to the team’s practice squad. Reagor signed with New England last summer after being waived by the Minnesota Vikings.

The former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver played in 11 games last season with the Patriots after being elevated from the practice squad last October. Reagor didn’t make a lot of noise on offense, recording seven receptions (23 targets) for 138 yards.

However, he was a viable option on special teams as he had a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown in Week 17 against the Buffalo Bills. That said, Reagor couldn’t separate himself from the other Pats receivers in training camp and ultimately ended up on the practice squad.

The former first-round pick will look to find another opportunity in the league where he could get on the field sooner. It won’t be easy for Reagor as he hasn’t done much in his NFL career to warrant a 53-man roster or practice squad spot.
