The Boston Red Sox have endless depth throughout their roster. However, things are changing. Kristian Campbell is taking first base drills, and it seems like the Red Sox are making space for a certain infielder in particular.
Marcelo Mayer, the fourth overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, has been slugging in AAA Worcester. Since the beginning of the season, he's recorded 8 HRs, with a league-leading 41 RBIs. The problem is that the Red Sox infield is stacked with contributing players, especially with the signing of Alex Bregman last offseason. So, when Mayer DOES get called up, where and when would he be placed?
Red Sox Can't Wait Any Longer Before Calling Up Marcelo Mayer
The when can be answered with "sooner rather than later". With Campbell practicing to be at first base since Triston Casas went down with a torn patellar tendon, fans are suspecting that Mayer will be taking second base full-time...or at least alternating between second and shortstop with Trevor Story.
Since April 22nd, Trevor Story has been batting .134 with just one home run and is hitting an abysmally low 13-96. He also leads the league with 59 strikeouts. If this "production" keeps up, Mayer could be taking his spot there full-time as well.
In the end, it depends on many factors, including how the players above him perform. Since Casas has been injured, there has been a void at first base. Maybe Campbell can take care of that for the time being, but that will come with time.
As for right now, the Red Sox haven't brought him up yet. But they can't wait that much longer, especially with their playoff aspirations slowly drifting away with their 25-25 record as of May 21st.
