Red Sox Have a Potential Gold Mine for First Base Solution

Nathaniel Lowe just got DFA'd by the Nationals, and he could be a sneaky pickup.

The Boston Red Sox need a first baseman. Abraham Toro has been slumping hard in his second half of the season, batting .191, with a .559 OPS, along with only 13 hits in his 68 at-bats (21 games played).

Many believed they could take the interior route and focus on bringing back up Kristian Campbell or "The Password". The problem is that Campbell can't figure out the position yet, and Garcia hasn't played a game there yet. They may need to find a rental solution, and Nathaniel Lowe had just been DFA'd by the Washington Nationals.

Red Sox Could Turn to Recently DFA'd Veteran to Fill 1B Need

To make way for the returning Dylan Crews, D.C. thought it would be best to try to cut ties with the former World Series Champion. This would be an excellent opportunity for the Red Sox to pounce. DFA'ing Toro would be an ideal scenario, and claim Lowe as a temporary replacement.

At Fenway, Lowe has been a good hitter, batting .263 with an OPS of .770. He's the lefty Alex Bregman: absolutely fit for the ballpark. His 2025 stats aren't the best, as he batted .216 with a .665 OPS. However, he's still hit 16 home runs in 119 games played for them, which would be a good power option for the latter half of the starting nine for the Red Sox.

Not only will Lowe be a positive bat for the Fenway Faithful, but he will also bring in more postseason experience. He will also reunite with his former World Series teammate, Aroldis Chapman. Bringing veteran and postseason experience is key to a team wanting to make a playoff push. Adding Lowe will do just this.

Will the Red Sox want to pounce on the opportunity? Maybe not, but they should. He'll be a good option for them as a platoon bat with Romy Gonzalez. He would fit in nicely and will, for sure, be a key player to their push, especially playing at Fenway.
