Red Sox Have Edge Over Yankees in Pursuit of Top Free Agent
By Ryan Markham
As the MLB offseason rolls on, the Red Sox are looking to stay aggressive in the free agent market, and Alex Bregman's name has been linked with Boston for the past couple of weeks. In a recent development from MLB Network's Jon Morosi and Tyler Milliken on X, Boston may be a better suitor for Bregman than their bitter rivals, the Yankees.
Red Sox Close to Landing Alex Bregman per Latest Reports
Bregman coming to Boston would bolster the Sox lineup immediately, adding a right handed bat that they have been desperately needing. He's a proven winner twhohas unbelievable numbers against the Red Sox. This past season, Bregman batted .500 with 8 hits and 3 home runs in his 4 games against Boston, which were all played at Fenway Park.
While the bullpen and a backend starter remain priorities for the Red Sox, all chips should be put on the table for Bregman who would add versatility to this lineup alongside the slugger Rafael Devers and do-it-all Jarren Duran. He would slot in nicely at the top half of the order and provide opposing pitchers with another problem to deal with. Defensively, Bregman could play 3rd or 2nd base which would allow Rafael Devers to move to 1st or DH, as defense has not been Devers strong-suit during his career.
The Yankees, recently acquiring former MVP Cody Bellinger, have more of a need at first base, per Jon Morosi. They have been linked with free agent Christian Walker and Anthony Santander as they missed out on re-signing Juan Soto earlier this month. The Astros remain a candidate to re-sign Bregman after trading Kyle Tucker to the Cubs, but acquiring Isaac Paredes in the deal makes you think they aren't as in on Bregman as they once were.
As it stands right now, the Red Sox are a more realistic suitor for Bregman's services, and this will be something to monitor as free agency continues. The top remaining free agents other than Bregman include Corbin Burnes, Roki Sasaki, Christan Walker, and Pete Alonso.
