Oh boy, this is a roller coaster season if there ever was one for the Boston Red Sox.

First came the Alex Bregman signing itself, where he was going to be the de facto substitute for Rafael Devers at third base come the regular season. Devers gets upset about it, and the organization poorly communicates its plans to him. Devers is gone, and now Bregman's agent, Scott Boras, has made it clear that Bregman is open to talks about a possible extension with the Red Sox.

"I always tell the team — and Alex directs me to tell them — we’re always open to any conversation," Boras said earlier this week, per Boston Globe's Tim Healey. "Any player who plays well somewhere, it’s something that’s important for the team and important for the player. It’s an additive."

Bregman is currently recovering from a quad injury, which has been one of the many factors as to why the Red Sox are underachieving this season. Injuries have plagued the roster, with Triston Casas suffering a torn patellar tendon, Tanner Houck and Richard Fitts being bombarded with them as well, and now, most recently, Kutter Crawford will undergo wrist surgery, ending his season as well.

Despite the injuries, the endless constipating decisions by manager Alex Cora and the front office, along with the underachieving ballclub as a whole, Bregman still wants to seek talks with the organization about staying put. This shows a lot about his character, especially as a clubhouse leader.

Many enunciate that a good leader will carry a ballclub, and with Bregman, he's posting a 2.9 WAR. That's the second-best of this 2025 Red Sox roster, and he's been out since May 24. Recent news came out about him returning after the All-Star Break, around July 18, which most likely means he won't be traded. This can be a good thing for the Red Sox if they play their cards right, and extending Bregman is the right move.

Bregman is an All-Star third baseman who's already a Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, and a 42.5 WAR player. Before he got injured, he was hitting 11 home runs, an OPS of .938, and a slugging percentage of .553. His average exit velocity is the highest it's ever been in his career this year at 92.1 mph, and his home run rate is the highest since 2019 at 4.9%.

With his best playhouse, that is Fenway Park, Bregman's been killing the baseball and has been a much better defensive player than Devers has been.

Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow has been getting so much backlash these past few weeks, especially since the Devers trade on June 15. However, he has a chance to silence everyone by being the first person at the negotiating table with Bregman and Boras, and by having an amazing trade deadline.

If Breslow does what he says he's going to do, it'll relieve the fans of another heartbreak.
