Star WR Who's Perfect for Patriots Could Reportedly Request Trade in Offseason
The New England Patriots' disastrous 2024 season somehow got even worse in Week 17, as the team's lifeless performance in front of the home crowd highlighted the ugly current state of this squad.
However, with only one game remaining on the campaign, that means the offseason is right around the corner. This time offers the organization a chance to reassess, adjust, and seek out the improvements that are needed across the board.
One area that clearly requires some help is the offense, which is lacking legitimate playmakers to aid quarterback Drake Maye in the team's quest to return to contention. Getting Maye a star wide reciever should be the Patriots' top priority this offseason, and it turns out one division rival may make their job even easier for them.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport dromped a bombshell Sunday morning in regards to the New York Jets' current dysfunction. Rapoport says stud wideout Garrett Wilson is unhappy with New York's quarterback situation, and requesting a trade is a possibility this offseason if the Jets don't move on from Aaron Rodgers.
Now, there's several steps will need to happen before Wilson officially requests out -- but this is the first toward that exact scenario. It's clear the elite playmaker wants a better QB to catch passes from, and Maye would be a massive upgrade over Rodgers.
After all, with Maye only being 22 years old and Wilson at about 24.5 years of age, these two could legitimately make waves together for the next decade. New England is also flush with cap space and offers no actual competition for Wilson to worry about, so he'd get both his monetary and role desires fulfilled.
Pulling off a trade of this magnitude with a division rival wouldn't be easy, but the Patriots have the ammunition to make an offer that New York may not be able to pass up. That does require the Jets hitching their wagon to Rodgers, however, and they'd be foolish to push out a foundational franchise piece for a washed-up star whose football days are numbered.
Regardless, the Pats will have options through trades and free agency this offseason to upgrade their receiving corps. With how quickly things can change once the year is done, New England's in fantastic position if a bigger fish like Wilson does suddenly want out.
