Losing Skid Reaches Seven Games as Red Sox Fall to Braves

The Boston Red Sox appear as if they’re stuck on a runaway roller coaster, inching closer to oblivion with each passing game.

After being handed a 4-2 defeat by the Atlanta Braves Monday night at rainy Fenway Park, the Red Sox have now lost seven straight and sit 11 games below .500 with a 27-38 record.

Throughout their horrid skid, the Red Sox have failed to come up with timely hits, repeatedly stranding runners on base. Monday was more of the same. The Red Sox belted out 10 hits, but where only able to plate two runs.

In the ninth, with two outs and the Red Sox trailing 4-1, Pablo Sandoval notched his 1,000th career hit on a ground-rule double to deep center. The hit marked his second double of the game. Mike Napoli then reached base on a throwing error. Mookie Betts followed by driving in Sandoval on a lined single to center.

Boston’s comeback bid was all for not as Braves closer Jason Grilli was able to retire Alejandro De Aza on a grounder back to the pitcher’s mound to end the game.

The opening innings were a symbol of what was to come for the Red Sox. John Farrell‘s club entered the game with the hope of scoring some runs off Braves rookie pitcher Williams Perez. Instead, Perez worked his way out of three jams as the Red Sox grounded into three twin killings in the first three innings. The plays abruptly killed their chances of scoring early on.

Perez limited the Red Sox to five hits and no runs over six innings of work. He improved to 3-0 on the season with the victory.

Rick Porcello pitched for the Red Sox. He was respectable, allowing four runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings. Porcello dropped to 4-7 in defeat.

Xander Bogaerts drilled his third homer of the season in the seventh inning. He continues to be one of the club’s loan bright spots amid a dim bunch.

The Red Sox and Braves will play game two of their three game set on Tuesday afternoon. The tilt will get underway at 4 p.m.
