After an injury plagued season, the Boston Celtics are hoping Kelly Olynyk can step up.

Kelly Olynyk is about to enter the final year of his contract with the Boston Celtics, and it’s time for him to show everyone he was worthy of a first-round selection.  Admittedly, I was a little tough on Olynyk.  Trading him and putting Abdel Nader into the rotation isn’t the smartest idea, but hey it was the offseason.  Realistically, Olynyk can play a big role on this Celtics team and they’ll need him to make it deep into the playoffs.

The vibe I’ve gotten from Celtics fans is that their patience with the Canadian big man is starting to run thin, and that’s never a good thing.  Olynyk is a 7-footer who can knock down three’s and when he gets going, he can really be a problem for opposing defenses.  He played 69 games last season and had a nasty shoulder injury that really hindered his performance for  the rest of the season.

Olynyk had surgery on that shoulder in the offseason, and ended up resting.  He should be ready to go once training camp opens in a week, and Boston will be watching.

More from Boston Celtics

It’ll be very interesting to see how Olynyk fits in beside new addition Al Horford.  Horford should help stretch the floor for everyone, and Olynyk will be one of the guys  that benefits.  He can start driving to the basket more instead of hanging out by the three point line.

If Olynyk doesn’t stay healthy this season, it’ll definitely be his last season in Boston.  I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets traded mid-season.  We all know Danny Ainge has done much wilder things (Rondo? KG? Paul Pierce?)

I hope Olynyk finds a way to stay healthy and stretch his stats from 10 ppg to 15 ppg.  That minor jump along with adding a few more rebounds would help this team out quite a bit.  Especially since Boston has been known for having its offensive struggles.

So Kelly Olynyk here’s to a great 2016-2017 season.
