Patriots Gridiron News 11/9: Danny Amendola is New England’s Secret Weapon
New England Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola doesn’t have the big numbers, but he stays prepared to contribute when his number is called.
With Rob Gronkowski, Martellus Bennett, Julian Edelman and Chris Hogan drawing most of the attention on offense, the New England Patriots have a secret weapon in Danny Amendola.
The eighth-year pro took a pay cut to remain in New England prior to the start of the season and in turn has seen his playing time diminish. Despite that, he has remained prepared to make the big plays when his number is called. He has kept key drives alive and had a big 73-yard kickoff return in the game prior to the bye week. It was a return that helped seal the victory against the Buffalo Bills.

That play alone represented his willingness to do whatever the team asks.
"“Whatever I can do is pretty much all I can say,” Amendola said before Tuesday’s practice."
So far this season, the 32-year-old Amendola has caught 16 of 20 targeted passes thrown his way. The majority of those catches have come on crucial third down plays. He has also hauled in three touchdowns. He attributes his knack for making the big play to his preparation.
"“It all comes down to preparation and seeing what they do on film in the weeks before and finding a way,” Amendola said via the Worcester Telegram."

That preparation and willingness to take on a lesser role with the team has been a benefit to the Patriots’ offense and had made Danny Amendola a secret weapon the team can turn to when all other options are covered. That is something both New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels appreciate.
"“I think Danny has always done a great job of embracing whatever role we’ve given him,” McDaniels said. “Danny is an unselfish guy. Danny works extremely hard, prepares hard, he’s a great teammate, and he always makes the most of his opportunities. He takes advantage of those whether it be on special teams or on offense.“We just always try to do what we think is best for the team in every situation on early downs, third downs, red zone, two minute. And some of that is making sure we make smart decisions as far as who is out there, who is not out there, and try to do it on a week-to-week basis.”"
If Amendola keeps it up, he could see an increased workload which would lead to an opportunity to make more big plays.
