2 More Patriots Coaches Leave New England on Monday
By Cem Yolbulan
For the second offseason in a row, the New England Patriots are going through a radical transformation in terms of their key decision-makers and coaching staff. After going 4-13 under Jerod Mayo, the Patriots made the somewhat surprising decision to fire Mayo after only one year at the helm.
Patriots icon Mike Vrabel was hired shortly thereafter and he has been focused on building his staff since. Even though New England hasn't officially announced offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt's departure, he is widely expected to be replaced in the coming weeks. The Patriots parted ways with multiple offensive coaches last week.
Defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington's status for next season is also up in the air as the team has yet to interview a DC candidate.
Even though there haven't been any new hires, there have been plenty of departures, and those keep coming. Patriots insider Andrew Callahan reported on Monday that offensive line coach Scott Peters and assistant o-line coach Michael McCarthy are leaving to join the Bengals.
Patriots News: More Assistant Coaches Leaves New England
Peters was with the Browns for four seasons, working under Van Pelt. He was hired by the Patriots in the 2024 offseason and is now returning to the AFC North. McCarthy was his assistant in New England last season.
The Patriots will have to make a decision on their offensive coordinator hire before they can begin to fill the rest of the coaching staff. New England has interviewed Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown and Chargers passing game coordinator Marcus Brady so far for the OC vacancy. There will likely be more interviews in the coming weeks before an official decision is made.
