San Jose Sharks outlast Boston Bruins 7-4 in wild game
By DJ Smith
The Boston Bruins entered last night’s game against the San Jose Sharks scoring just 2 goals during their West Coast road trip and as a result have not been able to pick up a point so far. Their offense pressure was something fans were clamoring for coming in to last night’s game, and while they did produce an offensive outburst last night the Sharks had a larger offensive outburst.
The Bruins appeared to come out on fire at puck drop, scoring two goals in the first three minutes of the first period thanks to Reilly Smith and Gregory Campbell. That certainly encouraged Bruins fans who stayed up late to watch the Bruins try to capture their first point of this West Coast road trip, and it seemed like tonight might be the night they finally get those points.
Coming into the second period the Bruins looked like a team who was playing clean hockey in all three zones, and it must have been encouraging to see that for coach Claude Julien. However the second period saw an offensive outburst like we haven’t seen at all this season from the Bruins, but it also gave us one of the worst defensive period so far from them.
Tommy Wingels and Tyler Kennedy were able to beat Tuukka Rask within the first 3 minutes of the second period tying up the game 2-2 with 17 minutes remaining in the second period. After a Gregory Campbell high sticking penalty the Sharks went on the power play where once again Tommy Wingels found the back of the net giving the Sharks their first lead of the night.

The offensive outburst had not yet finished though, just 45 seconds after the Wingels power play goal, Reilly Smith beat Antti Niemi once again thanks to assists from Carl Soderberg and Milan Lucic to tie up the game once again. With four goals already scored in the second period by both teams this game looked like it would be an entertaining game for the fans but surely frustrating for both coaches of the Bruins and Sharks.
Torey Krug scored his fourth goal of the season midway through the 2nd period that gave the Bruins the lead once again, however after another Bruins penalty Joe Pavelski made the Bruins pay by scoring his 11th goal of the season, and tying up the game 4-4 heading into the third period.
The third period was all Sharks, as the Bruins could not find the back of the net the rest of the night. Meanwhile the Sharks were able to beat Rask three more times thanks to Kennedy, Pavelski and Tomas Hertl in the third period and were able to put away the Bruins 7-4.
Bruins coach Claude Julien was upset after the Bruins played good defensive hockey the past two games, but seemed to play loose and sloppy hockey last night:
"“We just were really, really poor defensively, and poor in a lot of areas, so it was a tough night, a bad night for our hockey club.”"
After many were calling for more offensive pressure on the Bruins, they certainly showed that Thursday night however it was at the cost of playing good defensive hockey. The Bruins just have one day to recover and make some adjustments before finishing off their road trip against the Coyotes on Saturday night. The game can be caught on NESN starting at 8:00pm or heard on 98.5 the Sports Hub.
