Last night at UFC 181 former WWE champion CM Punk appeared and announced he was joining UFC and would most likely hold his first fight in 2015.
In case you don’t know why this is such a big deal I’ll try to do a quick summary about why Punk joining UFC last night was such a big deal.
Punk was with WWE since 2006 but was vastly underused until 2011 when he cut one of the best promos in professional wrestling, among the people he called out for holding him back were Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon and Triple H, all of whom are WWE executives.

Punk was getting tired of the storylines he was put in and everything came to ahead in January when Punk got upset about his booking for Wrestlemania 30, so he decided to walk out on WWE. He had been quiet regarding the issue for 11 months, but on Thanksgiving night he went on the Art of Wrestling Podcast with Colt Cabana and broke his silence. He went on for two hours about his experiences in WWE and what led to his departure.
So last night at UFC 181 he made a surprise appearance and announced he would be working with UFC in 2015, a move that many did not see coming. In the interview with Joe Rogan, Punk commented on his new career choice. “This is my new career, 100-percent. I’m going to go full steam ahead, all systems go after today, and it’s going to be fun. I have nothing but respect for everybody here at the UFC, everybody who steps in the Octagon to fight. And when it’s all said and done, when I’m finished, everybody’s going to have to respect me because I have come here to fight.”
The Dirt Sheet
CM Punk joining the UFC is huge news in both the wrestling world and MMA community. This is a HUGE pickup for Dana White and the UFC because now you can bet that the buyrate for Punk’s first pay-per-view fight will be off the charts, and if Punk is able to win you can expect the buyrates to spike every time he is on their card. This is a win for CM Punk as well, he has a strong background in judi-sou so he is already one step ahead of the game in terms of skill level. It should be interesting though to see how Punk does compared to Brock Lesnar, if you recall Lesnar left the WWE for the UFC and became the heavyweight champion at one point. Since then Lesnar has left the UFC and came back to the WWE, but his reign as UFC Heavyweight Champion is certainly memorable.
