With the season in full swing and the team likely destined for another losing campaign, the Boston Celtics have started to seek out teams who have interest in acquiring All-Star floor general Rajon Rondo.
The Celtics are reportedly in talks with several clubs, including the Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings and New York Knicks. Dallas seems to be the likely landing spot for Rondo if a deal comes to fruition. ESPN’s Marc Stein reports that the Mavericks are “serious” suitors to acquire Rondo.
Boston is seeking a high return in exchange for Rondo’s services. Dallas is willing to package center Brendan Wright and a first-round pick for Rondo, according to Stein. Celtics general manager Danny Ainge hasn’t confirmed the rumors, but his potential desire to deal Rondo would come as no surprise.
Rondo is currently playing under the final year of his contract. Past reports have indicated that Rondo will be in search of a max contract come free agency this summer. If the rumors hold truth, it would appear as if the Celtics have decided to move forward into the future without Rondo at the helm.

Now Rondo is a player of immense talent, but he also lacks in several key areas. His scoring woes have been highlighted more than ever this season, especially by his atrocious free-throw shooting. His confidence seems to be shaken at the moment and that’s a scary thing. He is one of the best passers to have come through the league in recent memory, but that ability alone doesn’t warrant a max deal.
Ainge has undoubtedly given the situation the upmost thought. At the end of the day it’s difficult to justify giving $100+ million to a player who lacks scoring ability. Rondo isn’t getting any younger at age 28. The time to make a move and maximize his worth is now.
The Mavericks are a perfect fit. They’re a team that’s a passing point man away from a potential return to the NBA Finals. Wright, who they’re willing to trade away for Rondo, is not an elite piece by any means, but he’ll provide the Celtics with legitimate play around the rim. They’ve seriously lacked in that area this season. Wright has steadily improved and it he would instantly slot into a starting role.
Awarding a player whose not worthy of a max contract is a mistake. It appears as if Ainge realizes that and is looking to save the team a headache down the line.
