Frustration Boils Over as Red Sox Swept by Orioles

The Boston Red Sox were swept out of Baltimore Thursday night, falling to the Orioles, 6-5. Starting pitcher Wade Miley was woeful and manager John Farrell was not pleased with what he saw. David Ortiz provided a glimmer of hope, smacking a solo homer in the eighth after sitting out the middle game of the three-game set.

Miley was yanked from the game after just 69 pitches. He threw four innings, surrendering five runs on nine hits, including three home runs. Miley was lifted from the game in favor of Steven Wright in the fifth by Farrell. Miley visibly took great exception to his skipper’s call to the bullpen.

Caught on camera, Miley was shown screaming and angrily acting out towards Farrell in the dugout before bolting for the clubhouse. Miley had allowed four homers through his first 11 starts. Clearly Farrell was sick of watching balls fly out of Camden Yards. Miley felt as if he had more to offer. The frustrations of recurring disappointment apparently caught up to the two Thursday.

Adam Jones, Nolan Reimold and Manny Machado all homered off Miley.

The offense did show some signs of life after being held to just two runs through 18 innings of baseball to begin the series.

In the fourth, Mike Napoli plated Dustin Pedroia on a sacrifice fly. Pablo Sandoval then slugged a two-run double to left-center field. The Red Sox posted three runs to cut the score to 4-3.

Xander Bogaerts added an RBI single in the sixth and Ortiz came through with his seventh homer of the season in the eighth, but it was too little. The big-fly marked his first since May 17.

Orioles starter Chris Tillman pitched just well enough to limit the Red Sox from overtaking the lead. He lasted 5 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and four runs. Zach Britton was called upon to close out the game in the ninth. He did so to earn his 17th save of the season.

The Red Sox will return home Friday for a series with the Toronto Blue Jays.
