Isaiah Thomas Training and Hooping with Floyd Mayweather

Earlier this month, Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas posted a tweet announcing that he’s entered into a workout partnership with none other than Floyd Mayweather, boxing’s 48-0 champ, attracter of much controversy, and casher of very, very large checks.

In case you’re wondering, TBE stands for ‘The Best Ever,’ which serves both as Mayweather’s nickname and a kind of promotional/motivational phrase, emblazoned on various articles of clothing, available to buy on the boxer’s website, TheMoneyTeam.com. In addition to selling goods, the website features numerous pictures of fringe members of Mayweather’s ‘Money Team,’ Justin Bieber, Pauly D, and Warren Buffett among them. Thomas is on there as well, sporting one of the hats that can be purchased.

However one feels about Mayweather’s adoration of himself and his own wealth, or his issues with domestic violence, it’s hard to deny he’d make a pretty damn good training buddy. He and Thomas waking up at the crack of dawn to get in some solid conditioning should have Celtics fans even more psyched about the guard’s first full season with the team.

Mayweather and Thomas have actually known each other for awhile. According to an article on Foxsports.com, the two met five years ago when Thomas attended a Mayweather workout in Las Vegas. They apparently got a chance to really forge their friendship later that night at a Robin Thicke concert, and have been in steady communication ever since. They’ve likely hooped together in the past, but today a video was released of the two going at it this summer, matching up against each other in a series of 5-0n-5 games.

Good to know Thomas’ team prevailed 3-2. He definitely shouldn’t be taking it easy on the champ, even if he did really buy Thomas a Bentley. On September 12th, Mayweather will put his undefeated record on the line against Andre Berto, in a fight he’s claiming will be his last. He’s an overwhelming favorite to continue his perfect run and Thomas may very well be there to witness it. He might even get to escort Mayweather to the ring. If Bieber and a guy wearing the Burger King costume can do it, why not?

We’ll see too if Mayweather makes the trip to Boston to watch Thomas. The TD Garden isn’t exactly known for its star power. The most recognizable faces sitting courtside are typically the Patriots and Red Sox players who stop by from time to time. Celtics fans’ reaction to Mayweather popping up on the Jumbotron would be interesting. He doesn’t exactly seem like Boston’s type of guy, but who knows? As long as his buddy Thomas continues to lead the team up the Eastern Conference standings, he may be welcome with open arms.
