The Red Sox are 16-10 in September, climbing out of the AL East cellar in the process.
Blake Swihart had his first career multi-homer game, driving in five runs as the Red Sox plated six in the first and never looked back.
Mookie Betts, Dustin Pedroia, and Jackie Bradley, Jr. all had two hits for the Red Sox. Rick Porcello (9-14) picked up the victory despite a shaky first inning.
Porcello pitched eight innings, giving up four runs on six hits. After the Yankees plated all of their runs in the first, Porcello settled down to allow only two hits over the next seven innings.
Since August 1, the Red Sox are 31-22. In the process, they have climbed to three games under .500 on the season. Not only have they turned to the future these past two months, the Red Sox have played the majority of their games without Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval. Of the 53 games the Red Sox have played since the beginning of August, Ramirez has played in only 14 of them. Sandoval has played slightly more, appearing in 23. Neither man has played in the month of September.

Betts, having a solid second season, led off the game with his 42nd double of the year. Pedroia followed with a single and Betts scored the game’s first run after a Xander Bogaerts fielder’s choice.
Doubles by David Ortiz and Brock Holt were sandwiched around a Travis Shaw fielder’s choice before Swihart’s first home run, a three-run shot.
The Yankees responded with four runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a Dustin Ackley 2-run homer.
Betts added a home run, his 16th, in the fifth and Swihart hit his second homer, a two-run shot, in the 8th.
Michael Pineda (12-9) took the loss for the Yankees, giving up seven hits and seven runs in six innings.
With five games remaining, the Red Sox have a shot at finishing at .500 for the season. They finish the 2015 campaign with three games at Cleveland after playing two more in New York.
The Red Sox are 8-10 against the Yankees in 2015. Not only do the Red Sox have a chance to even up the season series, two more wins will lessen the Yankees chances at winning home field for the wild card game. At the time of this writing, the Yankees hold a three-game lead over the Astros for the first wild card spot.
Helping put a damper on the Yankees season? It’s not a championship but for the Red Sox, at least it would be something to smile about.
