New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels called in to WEEI’s Kirk & Callahan on Monday morning to discuss Sunday’s 16-0 loss to the Bills and the return of Tom Brady.

It was not a pretty game offensively on Sunday.  Following the very forgettable 16-0 loss to the Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels checked in to the radio talk show and discussed how the team prepared offensively not knowing who the quarterback would be until just before the game.

While early indications were that Jimmy Garoppolo would return, rookie Jacoby Brissett was the quarterback under center.  As both were dealing with injuries, McDaniels told the morning radio show that the team prepared and were ready to go with either quarterback.

"“We were getting everybody ready to go, and those two guys certainly were involved in the preparation,” McDaniels said via WEEI. “Anytime you’re dealing with the things that they’re dealing with, it really comes down to ultimately a medical clearance the day of the game. When we’re going through our meetings, our walk-throughs — and both of them were limited last week in practice to what they could do — the best thing you can do as a coach is try to prepare them to play as they’re cleared and have them ready to go mentally. And wherever they’re at physically, you try to manage that the best you can if they’re cleared to play. So that’s what we were doing. Our process was the same as it normally is.”"

McDaniels went on to say that both players were involved in meetings and practices.  It was obvious, however, that the Patriots game plan with Brissett playing under center was much more watered down than it would be for Garoppolo.  Unlike last Thursday night’s game against the Houston Texans, Brissett wasn’t able to have the same success.

All in all it was a combination of sloppy play, penalties and the Bills defense that prevented the team from getting anything going.  Play calling also played a factor and that is an area McDaniels takes the blame.

"“I thought they coached better than we did and played better than we did and executed their game plan,” McDaniels said of the Bills. “They had something ready to go. It wasn’t complicated. That was what they chose to do. They didn’t give up much production in those two plays.”"

As much credit as McDaniels has taken with the team’s success through he first three weeks, he is looking forward to working with Tom Brady who returned to the team Monday after serving a four-game suspension.

The offensive coordinator said he spoke briefly with the quarterback as the team now turns the page and prepares for Brady’s much anticipated return:

"“Look, I’ve had a long relationship with him, worked a long time with him, as has the rest of our coaches and players. [I] look forward to getting him [and] Rob Ninkovich back today and moving on and trying to prepare as hard as we can to play better, coach better than what we did yesterday for the Browns game.”"

And for Brady’s motivation this season, McDaniels said the quarterback will have the same motivation as he always does.  With the team coming off a very lackluster performance and his absence the first four weeks, the star quarterback will definitely be ready to go.

"“He wants to be the best player he can be every single time he takes the field. I wouldn’t expect anything different from him. Looking forward to having the opportunity to coach him here this week and work with him and get ready to play against Cleveland. And I’m sure he’ll be ready to go.”"
