Patriots Gridiron News 10/12: Martellus Bennett Rips His Former Teammates
New England Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett doesn’t have kind works for his former Chicago Bears teammates.
Martellus Bennett is happy to be a member of the Patriots. The outspoken tight end has been lighting it up on the field so far in New England, but remains a bit sour about his time with the Chicago Bears.
In a segment of ESPN’s “E:60” to air Wednesday, Bennett ripped his former team, primarily quarterback Jay Cutler. He noted one of the reasons for the team’s struggles was their lack of leadership and also their lack of toughness.
"“That’s why we didn’t win games,” said Bennett in the segment. “And coaches liked the bitches.”"

Those are harsh words, but Bennett’s unhappiness in Chicago is what led him to New England. Now, the Pro Bowl-caliber tight end is speaking out about what he feels went wrong in Chicago. According to Bennett, the problem wasn’t really what, but who.
"“Some guys that you want to be the leader, that’s not the guy that’s a leader,” Bennett said when speaking about Bears quarterback Jay Cutler. “Everyone in the locker room knows that this is not the leader, but this is what you want the face of the team to look like.”"
Martellus Bennett is not having a problem finding leadership in New England. He is happy catching balls from Tom Brady and playing alongside players like Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman. So far this season, Bennett has 21 catches for 314 yards and four touchdowns and looks to be on his way to a great season with the Patriots.
Power rankings: The ESPN power rankings are out and the New England Patriots come in at No. 2 behind the undefeated Minnesota Vikings. The Patriots rose up three spots from No. 4 due to the return of Tom Brady and the team’s 31-13 victory over the Cleveland Browns. ESPN’s rationale:
"Coach Bill Belichick went 3-1 without Tom Brady this season, so now that the duo is reunited, the rest of the NFL should watch out. Belichick and Brady are 173-51 overall (.772) since joining forces, and 5-1 against the Bengals, their Week 6 opponent."
Practice squad: According to Patriots.com Tuesday, the Patriots announced that they have re-signed OL Ian Silberman to the practice squad.
Silberman, a former sixth-round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2015, returns to the team after an original stint on the practice squad back in the middle part of September. At 6-foot-5, 306 pounds, the product of Boston College played just one game as a rookie in the NFL. Silberman was released by the 49ers in late August before the Patriots signed him to the practice squad the first time.
