Boston Bruins Game One 6-3 Win Breakdown/Analysis

Boston Bruins Defeat Blue Jackets On The Road With a 6-3 Victory
The Boston Bruins had a comeback win for the ages last night against the Blue Jackets. With a final score of 6-3. The Bruins started off very slowly and looked like as if they did not know that it was a real game.
Columbus scored 3 minutes into the 1st period on their first shot of the game. This was also the first shot of the new season that Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask saw.
Rask did not look very good all night, the Blue Jackets managed 31 shots but I honestly do not remember any of them. With the exception for the three goals.
A big question for last night’s game was defense and in the first period it was a bit shaky. Especially when it came time for the B’s to kill Austin Czarnik’s penalty. The B’s had established their box when the puck found Nick Foligno on the goal line; as he was looking for the back door pass where he found a wide open Cam Atkinson who buried it.

Atkinson’s reason for being open was rookie Brandon Carlo did not have good positioning to prevent the back door pass. On the play he was over concerned with the slot pass that was never really there. Rule number one on defense is always have your head on swivel so that does not happen.

Another Seth Jones‘ goal was just a total full team defensive breakdown and the B’s just could not get the puck out of the zone.
All six Bruins goals came from the Backes Line. David Backes had three points; 2 goals and an assist, David Pastrnak had a four-point night; with 2 goals and two assists, and Brad Marchand had five points, 2 goals and three assists. It looked like Marchy had just picked up where he had left off from the World Cup where he was outstanding.
Other than those two goals the defense looked good, and Carlo learned from his mistake and made plenty of good plays, especially when he made a great outlet pass to Brad Marchand for the 5th goal of game.
The B’s rookies looked good, I did not notice Rob O’Gara which is a good thing because that means that he did not have any big mistakes. Czarnik; with the exception of the penalty that led to the Columbus goal; looked very good as well.
A new fourth line consisting of Dominic Moore, Noel Acciari, and Riley Nash; looked very good even though they did not produce any goals but they looked like the old Merlot line we customary to seeing the brains have. The line brought energy to the team every time they were called upon for a shift.
I have always said that the Bruins do not have any problems with scoring, and they have not had problems the past couple of years in that regard. Their main problem has lied with their defense. Ever since Johnny Boychuck left, the Bruins D has not been the same, but it looks like that may be changing.

Also what was very different about last night was the pace of the game. The Boston Bruins are no longer the “Big Bad Bruins”. They played a very fast pace game last night and it worked out for them, one of the main ingredients to that is they are utilizing their young; skilled and fast kids. I know that Claude prefers a defense first approach, but in this league it is offense first. The kids will learn how to play both sides of the puck as long as they are able to make mistakes and then learn from those mistakes.
