If the New England Patriots deal backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, the asking price will be very high.

The Jimmy Garoppolo trade rumors aren’t expected to end anytime soon.  The backup quarterback has been the conversation of potential trade talk even before New England Patriots starter Tom Brady returned from a four-game suspension.

With the 39-year-old quarterback playing at a high level and expected to continue for at least another couple seasons, trading Garoppolo seems like a sure bet.  Joining Kirk and Callahan Wednesday morning, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter added more fuel to the fire by stating that the team may at least listen to offers and what it will take for the Patriots to say yes to a deal.

"“In my mind, Sam Bradford went for a 1 and a 4 [round pick],” Schefter said via WEEI.  “So to me that is the starting point and I don’t even know if they would do it then.”"

Teams like the Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers will be looking for a franchise-type quarterback in the offseason.  How desperate those teams are will determine how much more each team would be willing to give up.

In Garoppolo, New England knows they have a quarterback who could be a more than adequate successor to Brady when he retires.  They also have a player in Jacoby Brissett who could also succeed Brady years down the road.

So, entertaining any offers for Garoppolo will not surprise anyone close to the team including Schefter, especially with the product of Eastern Illinois approaching free agent status after the 2017 season.

"“They have what they believe is a potential successor to Tom whenever Tom decides to stop playing,” Schefter said. “It’s difficult to work that out sometimes, but it can be done, especially considering Tom and Jimmy have the same agent. You figure something out. You just don’t give away the most important position in sports for nothing. That is one person.“My own sense on Garoppolo is that they are going to explore that market. That they are going to listen. They are going to see what is out there and if some team steps forward and makes it such that they have to trade him they will, but they are just not going to look to give him away. That is not going to happen.”"

Jimmy Garoppolo’s stock rose higher when he started the season with an impressive game and a half in place of Brady during his four-game suspension due to Deflategate.
