Patriots Gridiron News: Julian Edelman Looks to Set Franchise Playoff Record

New England Patriots Julian Edelman has a chance to surpass Wes Welker for the franchise record for most playoff receptions.

Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman is peaking at the right time.  When New England take on the Houston Texans in Saturday night’s divisional-round playoff game, Edelman will have a chance to make some history.

With just two catches (which should come quickly), the former Kent State quarterback will pass Wes Welker for the most playoff receptions in team history.  He has already passed tight end Rob Gronkowski (52), Deion Branch (56) and Troy Brown (58).

While Edelman has successfully taken the torch passed on by Welker, the 30-year-old wide receiver is not worried about the individual statistics.  The toughness, enthusiasm and hustle he has for the game every week shows he is more about winning and doing whatever it takes to lead his team to victory.

"“The No. 1 statistic in my life is the win-loss column and doing everything I can to help my team, whether it’s catching a pass or making a block, doing anything in the return game,” he said when asked about surpassing Welker’s record via ESPN.  “Whatever the team asks me to do, I’ll do.  That’s what I’m more focused on.”"

Despite a slow start, Julian Edelman led the team this season with 98 receptions for 1,106 yards and three touchdowns.  With most of that production coming in the second half of the season, the Patriots fiery receiver has given Tom Brady that reliable target once again.

LeGarrette Blount good to go:  Running back LeGarrette Blount, who was missing from practice Wednesday and Thursday due to illness, was removed from the injury report Friday.  This means he will be good to go Saturday night against the Houston Texans.

The only player on the injury report is receiver Malcolm Mitchell (knee).  With the return of Danny Amendola, it will be interesting to see whether the Patriots decide to have five true wide receivers active for the divisional round game.
