Patriots Super Bowl 51 Talk: America Hates the Patriots, and New England Fans Love It
In the past two days, media outlets have expressed their hate and disdain for the New England Patriots. In contrast, Patriots fans embrace this hate.
Yesterday, SB Nation ran “A Patriots vs. Falcons Super Bowl makes it easy for fans to decide who to root for“. Today we have “The real America’s Team: Whoever can slay the Patriots” from the New York Post and “America hates the Patriots more than ever” from the Boston Herald. It’s no secret that the New England Patriots are the most hated team outside of New England. When you win consistently, you aren’t liked.
No one liked the 80’s Celtics, or the 90’s Cowboys. Now, NFL fans hate the Patriots like college fans hate the Alabama Crimson Tide.
In my non-expert biased opinion, about 90% of people watching Super Bowl LI will be cheering for Atlanta. The Falcons, with one of the weakest fan bases in the league, will have every non-affiliated fans vote. America does not want to see Tom Brady put on a 5th ring. They hate Bill Belichick just as much.

The New England Patriots are definitely easy to hate, but what’s not often covered is the way fans embrace the hate. The Patriots ranked 2nd behind only the Dallas Cowboys on CBS’ Fan Base Rankings. “The best thing about Patriots fans is that they all basically live by the same three commandments:
- Deflategate’s a sham.
- Roger Goodell should be fired.
- Tom Brady is God.”
Every Patriots fan will argue until they are blue in the face that DeflateGate was a frame job by the NFL, Roger Goodell is the worst human to ever walk the earth, and Tom Brady is the greatest quarterback in the history of sports, and Belichick is the greatest coach.
Meeting a non-Patriots fan ensures you will cover at least one of those topics, but you’ll likely get into them all. New Englanders are extremely passionate about everything they do, especially their sports.

So fellow Pat’s fans, embrace the hate. Embrace the greatness of this New England team, and await Brady’s 5th ring. The continuous winning will undoubtedly come to an end in the future, and we will have to listen to every terrible joke and claim from fans of other teams. For now, keep on being the arrogant, spoiled fan of the new millennium, because this team is truly that great.
