New England Patriots linebacker Dont’a Hightower will enter the offseason as an unrestricted free agent.  He sounds optimistic about a long-term deal.

When the New England Patriots traded both Chandler Jones and Jamie Collins, all indications were that the team had long-term plans for linebacker Dont’a Hightower.  Appearing on ESPN’s “NFL Insiders” Wednesday, the product of Alabama talked about his future with the team and what he hopes happens.

"“That’s up in the air right now…Obviously we got a lot going on with the win and everything,” Hightower said via CSNNE.com.  “I’m just trying to enjoy this right now.”"

Hightower was the team’s best defensive player and made some key plays throughout the season and in the Super Bowl.  His strip sack of Matt Ryan gave the Patriots a greater chance of completing the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history.

That play was an example of why the Patriots hold Hightower in such high regards.  His play on the field, combined with his leadership makes him a top priority this offseason.  Hightower noted the trades of Jones and Collins as indications that the team really wants to keep him around.  Fans certainly hope that is the case.

"“I’d like to think [it’s a good sign the Patriots want to keep me], Hightower continued.  “But, again, guys can get put out and traded or whatever.  I’m just trying to go along with the ride right now and enjoy that Super Bowl victory.  I’m sure in a couple weeks all that free agency stuff will pick up, and I’ll handle that whenever that comes.”"

Hightower could be looking for a contract similar to the one Collins signed with the Cleveland Browns.  According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the defensive captain has already turned down a deal of more than $10 million per year offered by the Patriots prior to the season.

That means Hightower may not be willing to take a hometown discount to remain in New England.  If the Patriots want to keep him, they will have to pay him Luke Kuechly type money in the $12 million plus range.

The Patriots could and probably will hit him with a franchise tag if they aren’t able to come to an agreement on a deal.  That tag would be above $15 million for the 2017 season which Hightower seems okay with.
