Boston Red Sox prospect Sam Travis is showing off his big league power in spring training.

Every spring training, a young player flashes his potential for the Boston Red Sox.  Some live up to that potential and some fade.

Rookie first baseman Sam Travis is aiming to become one of those players who lives up to expectations and beyond.  So far this spring training he is making a case that his time is now instead of in 2018.

In a season in which the Red Sox are looking to replace the big bat of Big Papi, Travis is showcasing that he has the ability provide some of the power left void by David Ortiz.  The power-hitting prospect has launched a couple of homers this spring, including a three-run shot in the third inning of Monday’s 5-5 tie versus the Houston Astros.

"“He’s pretty exciting with the bat,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said, via the Boston Herald.  “Pretty decent at-bat the time before where he works the count deep, ends up striking out but still gets fastball middle of the plate.  We know he can hit the fastball and he’s proven it time and time again.  So, exciting, quick bat and good, good, power.”"

With his quick bat and power emerging, Travis’ defense will have to improve for him to really make an impact with the big club.  As impressive as he has been at the plate, his shaky defense is what might delay his journey to the major leagues.

Travis dropped a pop up in Monday’s game mostly due to a lack of concentration.  Following the mishap, he admitted he “misread” the play, but it was the type of play he needs to make as the team’s first baseman of the future.  That was also pointed out by Farrell.

"“He’s got to refine defense, there’s no doubt,” Farrell added.  “That’s not on a tough play on a wind-blown ball today.  But his footwork around the bag, just smoothing some things out defensively.”"

In all, Sam Travis could have a chance to showcase his power with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park this season.  And with the team looking for consistent options at the DH spot in the lineup, the team may need to give him a shot sooner rather than later.  Much of that, of course, will depend on the attitude and availability of Hanley Ramirez and how much offense Mitch Moreland can provide in the offense.
