Whether or not the New England Patriots will trade backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo remains the hot story this offseason.

The Jimmy Garoppolo trade rumors seem to change daily.  While ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter has been adamant that Bill Belichick will not trade the former second-round pick, fellow ESPN NFL insider John Clayton believes a New England Patriots trade of the backup quarterback is inevitable.

Of course, no one knows what Belichick will do in this situation, but the amount of opinion on the situation has been entertaining to say the least.

As much as Schefter has offered his belief that the team will not part ways with Garoppolo, Clayton offered his opinion during a radio interview Tuesday on Mighty 1090 in San Diego.

"“I think in the end they have to come to some kind of Jimmy Garoppolo trade, but as far as Brock Osweiler, he is just being held up until somebody makes an offer, and I don’t think anybody is going to make an offer,” Clayton said, via WEEI.com. “… In the end, Cleveland I think at the moment has a worse quarterback situation than they did last year because Terrelle Pryor was probably their best quarterback, RG3 (Robert Griffin) struggled and all they have right now is Brock Osweiler, who they expect to cut if they can’t get a trade, and Cody Kessler and (Kevin) Hogan. Not a great situation.”"

Clayton went on to note the amount of draft picks Cleveland has verses the lack of draft picks the Patriots have in the first two rounds to back up his belief.

Clayton vs. Schefter

I believe there is no doubt the New England Patriots are exploring a potential deal involving Jimmy Garoppolo.  There have been too many rumors leaked out there for them to be completely closed to the idea as Schefter continuously insists.

Again, the fact that the Patriots have been trade happy as far as their own draft picks could be an indication that they have something in the works to replace those picks. The current Malcolm Butler situation could bring a high-round draft pick back. But, Belichick could really cash in on a Garoppolo trade, especially involving the Cleveland Browns.

Imagine how many draft picks the maser wheeler and dealer could turn the No. 12 overall pick into?  Knowing how much Bill Belichick values his draft picks, I think John Clayton’s prediction might just be the concluding chapter to the Jimmy Garoppolo saga.
