Could the New England Patriots add another All-Pro cornerback to their team?

It is quite possible.  According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, the New England Patriots may still have interest in Seattle Seahawks All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman if the team were to “lose” Malcolm Butler.

The latest report by Howe does add to previous rumors of the team kicking the tires on a possible trade for Sherman.  However, it now appears that Bill Belichick’s plan includes having two top-notch corners.  Either the team will keep Butler to pair with the newly-acquired Stephon Gilmore or Sherman could be acquired to pair with Gilmore.

Ironically, Howe’s report comes the same day that Seahawks GM John Schenider said in an interview on an ESPN radio station in Seattle that the team has had discussions with other teams regarding a trade for the talented, but very outspoken Sherman.

Of course, this does not mean the Patriots would be a lock to acquire Sherman.  As reported by Howe in his report, a source confirmed that other teams have expressed interest in the 29-year-old Shearman and if anything was to happen, it would happen during the couple of weeks leading up to the NFL draft.

The timeline coincides with the deadline Butler has to sign his restricted tender.  If and when he does signs the tender, all kinds of trade possibilities will open up.

Howe highlighted a couple of those possibilities in his report.  The Patriots could trade Butler straight up for Sherman or get involved in a three-way deal with the New Orleans Saints.

In that scenario, the Saints would get Butler, Sherman would head to New England and the Seahawks would acquire draft picks.

Unless the Patriots have some other commodities the Seahawks would be interested in, those two scenarios appear to be the only way a deal could happen involving Richard Sherman.

While this has already been a pretty interesting offseason for the defending Super Bowl champions, it looks like the next couple of weeks will add more intrigue.  If Belichick somehow pulls off a deal for Sherman, the rest of the NFL would certainly feel defeated.
