The outstanding defense played by Boston Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. is on hold as he has landed on the 10-day disabled list.

The early part of the 2017 season has already been a challenge for the Boston Red Sox when it comes to team health.

While most of the team has battled a nasty flu, center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. finds himself recovering from a right knee sprain that has him headed to the 15-day disabled list.

The injury occurred during Saturday’s game when Bradley Jr. tripped over the first base bag.  Although he was able to move around following the injury, the team ordered an MRI at a Detroit hospital that revealed the right knee sprain. The team announced Monday that the center fielder will be placed on the DL to prevent further injury to the sprain.

"“I don’t have the full report from Dr. Asnis but the decision was made, he’s going to need some time,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said after Monday’s game against the Detroit Tigers, via Masslive.com.  “Hopefully it’s just the 10 days.  We’ll see.  He’ll be out there first available.”"

Farrell went on to acknowledge Bradly’s toughness and eagerness to get back on the field as soon as possible.

The team will certainly need his defense.  Before the injury, Bradley Jr. made a couple of outstanding outfield defensive plays that proved just why he is a Gold Glove candidate.

Andrew Benintendi to center field

With Jackie Bradley Jr. out Monday, John Farrell moved rookie Andrew Benintendi to center field.

The possibility of baseball’s top prospect playing center field was expressed during spring training, so the move doesn’t’ come as a surprise.

In fact, it is possible that he will play there until Bradley returns from the DL.  This allows Mookie Betts to stay in right field and places the team’s fourth outfielder, Chris Young, in left field.

"“We probably have more candidates to play left field than center field, so just trying to put the best defensive alignment on the field, that’s where we are today,” Farrell added."
