With the NFL draft just a couple weeks away, the New England Patriots are looking at quarterback options.

While a deal involving backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo appears to be off the table, the New England Patriots are still looking at their options for quarterback with the NFL draft just a couple weeks away.

As reported by the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson on Monday, the Patriots are among teams working out quarterback Nathan Peterman.

The NFL draft prospect out of Pittsburgh, who played his first three years with Tennessee, has similar skill sets to Garoppolo.  As the Patriots typically do prior to the draft, this may just be a case of the team checking out a player who has generated a lot of buzz as undervalued quarterback.

The 6-foot-2, 226 –pound Peterman also matches the height and weight of Garoppolo.  As the No.7 ranked quarterback in this year’s draft class, the overall assessment of Peterman marks him as a quarterback with similar qualities to those of Garoppolo, which makes him an intriguing possibility if the team does give in to trade rumors.

NFL.com describes Nathan Peterman as:

"“Smooth, quick set-up in pocket.  Grips the ball with big, 10-inch hands.  Poised in pocket and takes the hit to deliver a completion.  Will set-up, slide and then re-set before making his throw.  Can cut it loose from off-balance angles from bootleg or play-action if he sees a winning option break open early.  Full field reader.  Works all the way through his progressions.  Shoots glances at safeties to keep them in check.  Strong natural accuracy.”"

Sounds like a player who could learn under 39-year-old quarterback Tom Brady if indeed the Patriots get blown away with an offer for Jimmy Garoppolo.

The team currently have three quarterbacks under contract.  Along with Brady and Garoppolo, last year’s rookie Jacoby Brissett is the team’s third-string quarterback.
