New England Patriots: Rex Burkhead Explains Reason He Joined Team
Rex Burkhead says the reason why he chose the New England Patriots was the creative ways they use their running backs out of the backfield.
Due to his running style and ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, Rex Burkhead’s decision to signed a one-year, $3.15 million contract with the New England Patriots was an easy decision.
As a team that utilizes their running backs in multiple ways, Burkhead explained on Tuesday that the main reason he joined the Patriots was how they will use him in the offense.
"“It was very intriguing, of course, how they use them,” Burkhead said at Gillette Stadium, via NESN. “Split them out, use them in the backfield, just the multi-dimensional ways that they use them. What [Josh] McDaniels does with offensive schemes, it’s great, and I felt like it was a fit for me.”"

In signing with the Patriots, Rex Burkhead joins a group of running backs that consists of Dion Lewis, James White, D.J. Foster, Brandon Bolden and potentially Mike Gillislee. All of whom, have the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.
Coming off his most productive season in which he carried the ball 74 times for 344 yards and two touchdowns, Burkhead will have an opportunity to share carries out of the backfield. He will also have an opportunity in the passing game as well as contribute on special teams.
The Patriots way
Along with the way the team utilizes running back, Burkhead said another reason for joining the defending Super Bowl Champions was their sustained success. Like most players who join the Patriots, he has admired the team from afar and is excited to be a part of a winning organization.
"“Can’t deny that the Patriots have won plenty of games,” Burkhead said. “You always want to be part of a winning team. So it was definitely something that interested me and something I wanted to be a part of.”"
